Christopher Dunable was born in Germany on August 15, 1838 in Sondershausen. When he was 8 years of age the Dunable family moved to this country going direct to Chicago to live. There Christ, as he was always commonly known, grew to be a young man. When 22 years of age he was married to Miss Sarah Salter, of Braceville, Ill., on September 4, 1870. The young couple did not remain in that state but with a few other families, including the family of Christ's father, moved at once to Kansas and Clay county, homesteading in Oakland township. They came overland across the prairies. For about five years Christ remained in Oakland township when he moved to this city where he has resided almost continuously since. At that day the Union Pacific was built west, on this branch, only as far as this city, and Christ engaged in the draying business at which he was very successful financially. A few years ago Christ went into the hotel business renting the Gillet house. Later he removed to Horton leasing a hotel there. However, he remained there only a few weeks returning to this city to resume his bus line. He again took the Gillet house which he ran until June last. Since that time he has devoted his time to looking after his property interests in this city. When he moved to this city in 1875 he took the contract for carrying the Union Pacific mail. This work he retained, carrying the mail to the depot each day up until the time he was taken sick. He was a member of the Lutheran church in which he always took much interests. No lodge or order of any kind every claimed his membership. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dunable. Of these three together with his wife, survive him to mourn his death. His children now living are Fred, Albert and Mrs. Hoffman. He also had an adopted child, little Stella Dunable. A brother and sister, both living near Oak Hill, the only survivors of his brothers and sisters, were both present at the funeral. A large number of citizens of the city, to whom Christ's familiar figure has become endeared are grieved at the sudden loss of their friend, one of the first inhabitants of the city.
