Of all the emigrants who reach the United States from the countries of Europe, none show a greater aptitude in adapting themselves to our peculiar institutions than those who come from Switzerland. Having themselves lived in a country where one citizen is as good as another if he behaves himself as well, they almost immediately understand our political methods and customs and appreciate the advantages which are offered by our laws. The result is that they are at once contented and straightway proceed to make the most of their new surroundings. After their home is established and they have attained some degree of comfort, they look around and soon take a warm and intelligent interest in our form of government, in our schools, in our churches, in the affairs of our county administration, and so forth. People who come from some monarchy require a considerable time to adjust their old ideas to the new conditions. Not so with emigrants from Switzerland, as was shown by the Risse family when they came here. It seems that they at once understood our form of government and at once were acting in conjunction with our customs and laws. Christopher Risse, a prosperous farmer of Grant township, Hardin county, was born in Switzerland, September 2, 1851. He is the son of Andrew and Magdalena (Hoffmanner) Risse, who emigrated from that country to America when their son, Christopher, was two years old, and located in Green county, Wisconsin, later went to Kansas, thence to Illinois and in 1866 came to Hardin county, Iowa. They first located at Ackley and the following spring went to farming near there. Later the father bought a farm in Hardin township, near Eagle City, and he lived in the vicinity of Eagle City six or seven years, then moved to Sherman township and continued to live there until old age rendered him unfit for labor. Then he made his home with his son, the subject, he having been paralyzed during the last ten years of his life. His death occurred about 1890, when nearly eighty years old. He was a hard worker and an honest man and everybody thought well of him. The son, Christopher, grew to maturity on the home farm where he made a hand when but a mere boy, and he received his education in the common schools. He fanned for himself, at different times, before he was married, which event took place in 1882, he having chosen for a life companion Emma Brocker, of Grant township, this county, the daughter of Charley and Amelia (Remling) Brocker. Seven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Risse, namely: Hattie, wife of Charley Boeke, lives near her father's home in Grant township and has two children; Charlie A. married Daley Klemme and lives in Concord township; Howard and Harvey are twins; the former is an auctioneer, and the latter is at present attending Ellsworth College, and he also attended school at Iowa City; Elsie, Emma and Murl are all at home. Before he was married Mr. Risse bought one hundred and sixty acres of unimproved, wild prairie land in section 5, Grant township. There he built a home and has continued to reside to the present time. He has added to his possessions, first by purchasing eighty acres, which he added to his original purchase, and he now has two hundred and thirty-five acres of valuable land, which he has developed, placed under a high state of improvement and cultivation, and which, under his skillful management, yields abundant harvests. He has also handled a fine grade of live stock. Besides his fine home farm, he is the owner of a half section in sections 13 and 14, Concord township, having acquired this land in 1907. It, too, is productive, well located and valuable. Mr. Risse has taken an abiding interest in local affairs and has been school director for fifteen years. He was in the famous cyclone here about twenty-one years ago, when his house was demolished, his wife and one son injured, but fortunately, not seriously, and it made almost a clean sweep of all his outbuildings. When he saw the disturbance approaching in the southwest he thought it was smoke, but later knew it to be a tornado, and he hurried to the cellar with his wife and three children, also the hired man. One child was at school, but the school house was not touched. The house moved a little, then went up into the air and some of the debris from it went as far as Iowa Falls. Nothing daunted, Mr. Risse at once rebuilt his dwelling and outhouses and now has a pleasant and substantial home. He is a man of fine principles and stands well in his neighborhood. Mr. and Mrs. Risse are members of the Christian church at Hubbard. The children attend the Evangelical church. Politically, Mr. Risse is liberal, always for the best man, regardless of party lines. -------------------------
