Christopher Smith died at his home two miles northwest of Coggon on Wednesday evening July 15 at 7:30 o'clock, after an illness of about two weeks. Mr. Smith was born in County Meath, Ireland in September, 1832 and came to this country when 36 years of age, first settling in New York where he was married to Miss Mary Ann White. Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Delaware county about 40 years ago, and settled in Adams township, which has ever since been their home. To them were born five children; Edward, of Independence; Mrs. Thos. McMeel of Coggon; Mrs. J. J. Morrissey of Prairie; Katie, teacher of music in the visitation Convent of Dubuque; and John of Coggon; who were all at his bedside at the time of his death except Katie of Dubuque. Besides his wife he leaves one sister Mrs. Patrick Donnelly to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and loving father and brother. About 12 years ago, Mr. Smith was afflicted with spinal trouble and went to Hot Spring, Arkansas, where he was greatly benefitted, but never fully recovered his health and his death was caused by the old trouble. He was confirmed in the Catholic faith in early boyhood and has been a constant and devoted believer through his life. His funeral was held in the Belmont Catholic church last Friday, conducted by Rev Father Harlin of Edgerton, Wisconsin, assisted by Rev. J. J. Hanley of Monti and Rev. P. H. Ryan , pastor of the Belmont church. The Monti choir furnished the music. His body was laid to rest in the Belmont cemetery. Mr. Smith was a man of upright and sterling character, honorable in all his dealings with his fellow man, a good citizen and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.= Coggon Monitor Manchester Democrat, Manchester, Iowa August 1, 1903.
