Read More	(June 1 article) RAGING WIND KILLS 4 CHILDREN $500,000 Tornado Damage Twister Strikes At Least 15 Farms Lindsay to Hoskins Sunday night's death-dealing tornado left more than a half million dollars damage in its wake after striking heavily at at least 15 farms in Madison County and ripping through groves of trees in others. The tornado first struck northeast of Lindsay and did a hop, skip and jump to the northeast to one mile east and one-fourth mile north of Hoskins. Harold Alexander meteorologist in charge of the weather station reported after making an aerial survey of the damaged area. The tornado traveled diagonally between Madison and Norfolk. In the area about 7 miles east of Newman Grove, farms of Lawrence Dohman, Mark Stenger, and Mrs. Rose Widhalm were hit and damaged extensively. SCHOOLHOUSE WRECKED The tornado then leveled the Pleasant View schoolhouse two miles west of Madison, and struck at the farms of August Boysen, Joe and Vince Stevens, bachelor brothers; E. R. Raabe, Charles Bickley, Bob Zessin, Roy Robertson, Ben Kohl, Weldon Rakowsky, Eugene DeGroot, the Fannie Ploehn farm operated by Karl Goetsch, Leo Rakowsky, and Lawrence Klawonn. The Kohl farmstead, where two were killed, and the Weldon Rakowsky place, where one girl lost her life, are located on hilltops. The Klawonn place, also the scene of a fatality, is located on lower ground. Heavy damage was also done at the Leo Pakowsky farm and at another farm across the road owned by Mrs. Fannie Ploehn of California and operated by Goetsch. These places are just about a mile southwest of the Klawonn farm. ALL BUILDINGS DAMAGED At the Leo Rakowsky farm every building was damaged and several were demolished. Considerable damage was done to the house, which had recently been extensively remodeled, while barns and other buildings were unroofed or flattened. Mr. and Mrs. Rakowsky, their daughter, Bonnie, and a hired man, Paul Skiff, were all at home at the time, but took refuge in the basement and were not hurt. A pickup truck and a car were in the garage near the house. The garage was lifted and swept away, but the vehicles were left standing. They had been pushed together and slightly damaged, but both could be driven. Another coupe belonging to Bonnie Rakowsky, was in the farmyard also. It suffered a few dents but was also drivable. HORSES MISSING One of the two Rakowsky dogs was found dead, the other unhurt. Two horses were missing at midmorning Monday. At that time, it was believed that no other livestock was lost. No one lives at the farm operated by Karl Goetsch, but the house was considerably damaged. Six other buildings, barns and sheds, were destroyed, and a lot of fencing was ripped and twisted about the place. Mr. Goetsch said he had 55 head of cattle and 55 pigs on the place. All of the cattle were safe in the pasture. None of the pigs were dead, but a few had been crippled, he said. The front yard at this place was a jungle of twisted and fallen trees, and several large trees were down across the driveway leading from the road into the farmyard. DeGROOT PLACE LEVELED Another farm where every building was leveled was that of Eugene DeGroot, about 11 miles southwest of Norfolk, on old Highway 81, and across the road east and slightly south from the Weldon Pakowsky farm, where Cindy Carberry lost her life. The Eugene DeGroots were not at home when the storm struck, however. They were visiting at the home of Mr. DeGroot's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton DeGroot, widely-known fruit-growers. Their fine farm home, recently remodeled: a barn which had recently been remodeled into a machine-shed, and all other buildings were demolished. The DeGroots, along with several other stricken families, lost all of their possessions except the clothes they were wearing. ORCHARDS ESCAPE The large DeGroot orchards, about 10 miles south of Norfolk, escaped damage from the twister. Some hail fell there, but it was believed Monday that the damage was light. Just as Mr. and Mrs. Boysen reached the bottom step of their basement, a 2 by 4 board was driven through the window. They barely escaped being hit by the board. Practically all buildings were destroyed. CAR IS LEFT The garage was demolished, and the car left standing undamaged on the cement. Mrs. Boysen said their clock stopped at 8:50 p.m. Sunday. There is total destruction on the Raabe farm, and extensive damage on the Roy Robertson place. Charles Bickley was cut badly on his left arm by flying glass some of the tendons being severed. Mrs. Bickley escaped injury as she went into the cellar when she heard the storm develop, William Bickley, Norfolk, brother of Charles, reported. Practically all of the buildings, except the house, were destroyed. The house was damaged extensively. Two head of livestock were killed. Many fat cattle escaped. The Bickleys live on the homestead of his father, William Lewis Bickley. HOUSE BURNS After the tornado had struck their place, the Stevens brothers went to Madison to get something to eat, and while away, their house caught fire and burned to the ground. Their buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Sueper, who live a mile north of the Weldon Rakowsky farm, went into their cave when they heard the roar of the storm. Mrs. Rakowsky remarked she thought she heard a train, but her husband said there was no train on Sunday night. He said the roar sounded to him like a jet plane. The Sueper place escaped damage. RAASCH LOSES HORSES Nine horses owned by Phil Raasch, Norfolk, were killed. Four were killed together near Highway 81 about five miles south of Norfolk. Company F, 134th Infantry, posted guardsmen on roads leading to the devastated farms to turn back the hundreds of sightseers who tried to swarm over those places. Madison County authorities and state patrolmen from Norfolk along with neighbors, townspeople and Norfolk rural firemen quickly went to the stricken farmsteads Sunday night to give assistance. They worked under handicaps of darkness, mud and rain. The Ed Uecker family, who live about a mile northwest of the Klawonns, reported their clock stopped at 9:18 p.m. They were unhurt. HIT IN 1925 The path of the tornado was only about two miles from the area west of Madison that was swept by tornado the first week in June, 1925. Three persons lost their lives in that tornado, but it was not as widespread as the one that dealt death and destruction Sunday night. (June 2nd article) Rites Thursday For 4 Children Tornado Victims Joint funeral services for three of the four children killed in Sunday night's tornado will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church at Madison. The rites will be for George, 8, and Robert, 5, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kohl; and Lynelle, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Klawonn, all of Madison. The Kohl brothers will be buried in Madison Cemetery, while Lynelle is to be buried in Pleasant Valey Cemetery northeast of Madison. The bodies will lie in state from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ressegule Funeral Home at Madison. Funeral services for Cindy, 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carberry, Norfolk, who lost her life in the tornado will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church. Condition of two of the tornado victims was described Wednesday as poor, while that of another has taken a turn for the worse. Condition of Mrs. Lawrence Klawonn, which took a turn for the worse, Tuesday evening, and that of Mrs. Edwin Rakowsky was described as critical Wednesday noon. Condition of Mr. Klawonn was reported fair. All three were injured at the Klawonn farm. The other 16 tornado victims taken to Norfolk hospitals were recovering Wednesday. They are: Mr. and Mrs, Weldon Rakowsky and five children, Sharon, Lacreda, Arland, Pam, and Mark; Edwin Rakowsky and his son, Dwight; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kohl and two children, Raymond and Ruth; Gregg Carberry and Charles Carberry. The Carberry boy expected to leave the hospital Wednesday. They were injured in a tornado that started east of Newman Grove and ended near Hoskins where for buildings on the Clarence Schroeder farm were demolished. The farm is about 1 1/3 miles east of Hoskins.
