Description	:	Portland – Clair E. Waning, 81, died Friday, February 27, 1987, at a local hospital. He was born in Unity, June 5, 1905, son of Harry and Mabel (Libby) Waning. He attended Unity schools and was a 1923 graduate of Unity High School. Mr. Waning was the founder of Waning and Sons, Inc. Read More	Portland – Clair E. Waning, 81, died Friday, February 27, 1987, at a local hospital. He was born in Unity, June 5, 1905, son of Harry and Mabel (Libby) Waning. He attended Unity schools and was a 1923 graduate of Unity High School. Mr. Waning was the founder of Waning and Sons, Inc. The firm has been involved in church building projects throughout the state, including the construction of St. Plus X, Trinity Episcopal Church, and the restoration of the First Baptist Church, all in Portland; the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, the First Baptist Church of Lewiston, the First Baptist Church of Lisbon Falls and the First Redeemer Lutheran Church of Cape Elizabeth. The firm was also instrumental in the renovation of the Hyde School in Bath, following a major fire that destroyed much of the building. Mr. Waning was a member of the North Deering Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris (Thompson) Waning of Portland; one son, Harry Waning of Westbrook; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday from Chapel B of the Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 7-9 p.m. Spring burial will be at Fowler Cemetery in Unity. (Published in the Waterville Morning Sentinel)
