Mr. Sumstine was born June 23, 1923, to Samuel and Edith (Mapes) Sumstine in Kenesaw. He grew up in the Kenesaw area. He graduated from Kenesaw High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 23, 1945, he married Harriet Timm. They lived in Kenesaw. He was a mechanic. In 1951 they moved to Minden. He was a mechanic for Bauer Motors. In 1957 he opened Red's Auto Repair. He retired in 1980. In 1983 he moved to the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island. He returned to Minden last week after suffering a massive stroke. Survivors are one son, Michael of Minden; two daughters, Margaret Jorgensen of Hastings and Cheryl sumstine of Everett, Wash.; two sisters, Agnes Duncan of Lakewood, Colo., and Goldie Ashby of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.
