Engebretson was born February February 26, 1895, to John and Kristine (Hove) Engebretson at the family farm near Garretson. This is where she grew up and attended school. After graduating from Garretson High School in 1913, she attended college at the University of South Dakota, where she received her B.A. degree. Engebretson was born February February 26, 1895, to John and Kristine (Hove) Engebretson at the family farm near Garretson. This is where she grew up and attended school. After graduating from Garretson High School in 1913, she attended college at the University of South Dakota, where she received her B.A. degree. Following her graduation she taught in area schools for several years. On September 6, 1922, she married Anton C. Halls. After her marriage she able assisted her husband, the late Judge A.C. Halls of Minnehaha County, in his law offices, keeping the records of the City Auditor and assisting in tax matters for many years. She spent three years during World War II as an instructor in Code in the Sioux Falls Air Base. She served for seven years as a member of the State Soldiers Home Board. Having been an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary since it's organization, she served as its State President for the Northwestern Division, which comprises seven states. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, being a Past Matron of the local chapter, and passed Grand Historian. Clara was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson for many years had organized and directed children's and youth choirs and also directed many other activities. Anton passed away on May 29, 1956. Clara was elected to the office of Secretary of State for the state of South Dakota 1957 where she served for one term. She enjoyed spending time at their cabin along the Split Rock Creek. In 1980 Clara entered the Palisade Manor. Survivors include her brother Rudolph "Rudy" Engebretson of Garretson and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters. Casket bearers were Gordon Engebretson, Charles Engebretson, Alan Engebretson, Dean Engebretson, Paul Engebretson, Larry Engebretson, Clari Engebretson, Roger Engebretson, Bruce Rekstad adn Ronald Rekstad. Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Sioux Falls, with Minnehaha Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Dell Rapids Tribune January 15, 1997 Dell Rapids, Minnehaha County, South Dakota
