CLARA VARNER CLAIMED BY DEATH Passed Away in Cedar Rapids Hospital Thursday September 13th; Last Rites Held Saturday p.m. Mrs. Clara Varner, widow of Harry Varner, passed away at 11:30 p.m. last Thursday night, September 13th, 1945, in a Cedar Rapids hospital. Mrs. Varner's condition had been recognized as critical for several weeks, following an attack of pneumonia and complications. At that time she entered St. Luke's hospital for professional care, and later was brought to the Watson nursing home in Center Point. Due to the illness of Mrs. Watson she was removed to the hospital again the morning of the day she passed away. Mrs. Varner was born Clara Belle Hoaglan, daughter of Nicholas and Jennie Ashlock Hoaglan. She was born July 19th 1886 in Green's Grove community, four miles south of Center Point, and this community was her home throughout her lifetime. At her home the time of her death she had arrived at the age of 59 years, 1 month and 24 days. She grew to young womanhood in this community and in 1909 she was united in marriage to Harry Varner. They became the parents of one son Merle Varner, of Cedar Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Varner were engaged in farming until ill health forced Mr. Varner to retire about three years ago. At that time they came to Center Point to make their home, and Mr. Varner passed away March 7, 1944. Surviving her, besides the son in Cedar Rapids; are a sister Mrs. E. M. Sarchett of Center Point; a foster brother Harry Benson, of Omaha; and two grandchildren; Dean and Earl Ray Varner, both of Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Christian Church, with the Rev. L. Z. Patton, conducting the rites. Those who attended the coffin were James Osburn, Frank Osburn, William Lanning, John Ashlock, Lloyd Ashlock and A. E. Andrews. Burial was in the family plot in the Center Point cemetery.
