HANDY'S SUDDEN DEATH. The sudden death, while apparently in good health, of Mrs. Clara B., wife of Reuben B. Handy of this town created considerable excitement here the first of the week and led to the printing in the daily papers of many sensational and greatly exaggerated stories. Mrs. Handy died at her, home on King street Tuesday morning under conditions that were regarded with suspicion by her husband and members of her family. As a result of their suspicions Deputy Sheriff Harry S. Bourne was called into the case and he immediately started an investigation. The finding of certain letters, which it is claimed were pushed through a small opening in a window in Mrs. Handy's bedroom where they were found by her husband, and the intense suffering of the woman just before her death, led to the belief that she had been poisoned. Mr. Bourne felt justified in calling the matter to the attention of State Detective Bradford and Medical Examiner Faunce. An autopsy was held Wednesday at W. C. Davis undertaking rooms, and while there were indications that the woman might have died from natural causes, in order to make sure that no poison was in the system of the dead woman, Medical Examiner Faunce had the stomach removed and sent to Professor Whitney at the Harvard Medical school for a chemical analysis for possible poison. It is likely that the officials will not learn Professor Whitney's decision for a week. Harold Hart, the young man who was under suspicion of having given Mrs. Handy a "love potion," and whom it is alleged sent her the tender missives found by Mr. Handy, was subjected to a rigid examination Wednesday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff Bourne and State Detective Bradford, and while admitting that he was in love with the dead woman and that he had written her many love letters during their acquaintance, he denied that he gave her any candy or drugs which might have caused her death. After being questioned by the officers, Hart was allowed to depart. Until the result of Professor Whitney's examination is known the case will stand as it is now. Mrs. Handy's funeral was held from her late home Thursday afternoon, Rev. M.S. Stocking of the First M. E. church officiating. She leaves a husband and three children, besides a mother, three brothers and five sisters. Her age was 33 years, 5 months and 10 days.
