Symonds passed away at 5:30 p.m. on November 11, 1856 at her home at the age of 77 years, six months and seven days. She had been in failing health for the past six months. The long hours of misery were brightened by the visits and thoughtfulness of her friends and neighbors. Clara Ellen Vetterick, youngest daughter of Charles and Johanna Grundman Vetterick, was born on May 4, 1879 in Adair county, Iowa. She attended the country schools and grew to womanhood in the Carl area. October 28, 1908, she was married to Charles M. Symonds at the home of her mother. They started housekeeping in Cass county. Two daughters were born to this union: Glenda Wingo of Washington, D. C. and Eileen Jones of Corning, Iowa. In 1917 the family moved to Adams county, living a mile south of Corning, until moving to the present home in town 11 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away October 31, 1955. Those surviving her beside the two daughters are one son-in-law, William Wingo, and six grandchildren, John, Donald, and Jimmy Wingo of Washington, D. C., and Charlie, Edward, and Christina Jones of Corning; two sisters, Flora Brentnall of Creston and Anna Brown of Massena, and one brother, Frank Vetterick of Massena; also a number of nieces and nephews. She was always ready and willing to help her grandchildren and enjoyed their companionship. Her utter devotion to her family was shown in her daily living. Any time she could help or comfort a neighbor or a friend, she was there, doing what could be done, in a quiet unassuming way. When a young girl she joined the Methodist church and has maintained an active interest in the church and its work these many years. Services were held Tuesday, November 13 at 10 a.m. from the Methodist church in Corning, with the Rev. Brown Garlock in charge. Interment was in Victoria Center cemetery. Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. Doris Kapple, accompanied by Mrs. Kirby Hoskinson, pianist. Pallbearers were Homer Richards, Carl Gillet, Ivan Brentnall, W. S. Brentnall, Allen Vetterick and Harry Grundman.
