Shannon Birth: 1865 Death: Father: John Abel Shannon II (1826-1899) Mother: Elizabeth Fisher (1839-1894) Obituary: One of the saddest events it has been our duty to record for many weeks is the death of Clara, daughter of John and Elizabeth Shannon, who quietly passed from earth to her future heritage on Sunday evening May 11, at 6 o'clock. She was born in Clarksville, April 21, 1865, and was consequently 19 years and 20 days of age. Her childhood was a bright and happy one, which happiness was marred only by the disease which made its appearance at the age of ten years. Since that time she has never been healthy, much of the time having been confined to her home and oft-times to her room, when her sufferings were very great. She was taken with her last sickness about the middle of February and, though every kindness and attention that loving friends and medical skill could afford were shown her, the dread disease, rheumatic inflammation of the arteries producing gangrene of the left leg, continued to rack the frail body until the physicians found it necessary to amputate the left foot. This operation was performed March the 27th. After rallying therefrom her life seemed to be in the balance for several days but she finally grew better and was able to sit up at times. While she was thus convalescent she made a full surrender of herself to Christ and received the witness of her adoption into the family of God. On the 24th of April it was found necessary that another operation be performed and this time the limb was amputated at the knee joint. She rallied from this operation also but in a few days it was evident that nothing could save the young life which was so slowly ebbing away. Few mortals are ever called to endure pain so excruciating for so long a time and fewer still endure pain with such ____________ and so little murmuring as did she. When the death angel came in the quiet of the Sabbath evening she left her friends a final testimony that all was well and the spirit took its flight from its tenement of clay, leaving a last expression of peace and joy upon the countenance as if to assure all who looked upon it that "Jesus can make a dying bed feel soft as downy pillows are". The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church on Monday, at 3 p.m., by Rev. J.W. Hancher. The sermon was preached from the text "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life," this being the scripture so often repeated and dwelt upon by her during her last sickness. Clara spent a part of her school days in the public schools of Clarksville and her gentleness of manner and kindness of disposition won for her the love and admiration of all schoolmates. Many of them attended the funeral services and their sad countenances and tearful faces told their love and sympathy better than any other language can express. All the circumstances combine to make this an exceedingly sad death and the parents and friends have the sympathy of the entire community. We know the angels were her friends, Who bore her to the sky: And yet it seems a piteous thing That one so good should die. A piteous thing? Not so my friend, A blessed life with blessed end.
