Read More	Clara H. Hegg April 26, 1912 - August 28, 2014 Clara Hegg, age 102, died on August 28, 2014, at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held at First Lutheran Church in Brookings at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Visitation will take place at 9:30am preceding services at the church. Clara Helen Lunden was born April 26, 1912, to Ludvig and Tilda (Olson) Lunden at their farm near Toronto, SD. She graduated from Toronto High School and attended Augustana College where she received her elementary teaching certificate. She taught four years in the rural Longman School in Deuel County and three years at Toronto, SD. Clara married Johan Hegg in 1939. They raised their four children on the family farm near Brookings and continued farming until 1973 when they moved into Brookings. Clara was an excellent cook and frequently entertained family and friends. Her family especially relished her wonderful Sunday dinners, which often featured sour cream raisin pie. Clara spent many hours crocheting colorful blankets for each of her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren fondly remember playing fast paced, rowdy games of Rummy 500 with her. Clara enjoyed playing an active role in the community. A member of First Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday School, quilted for missions, and visited elderly church members at their homes. She actively supported her children in 4-H and became a 4-H Leader. She was a member of Sterling Extension Club, the hospital auxiliary, Civic League, and Sons of Norway. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Weiland of St. Cloud, MN, her son James and his wife Suzanne of rural Brookings, SD, and her daughter-in-law, Betsy Hegg of Arlington, VA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jon and Jason Weiland, Shannon, Rick, Daniel, David, and Nathan Hegg; thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sons Richard and Larry, and four brothers and three sisters. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be given in Clara’s name.
