Clara Johanna Amunson was born on Sept. 9, 1922, on the family farm southeast of Ute, to William and Alma (Mohr) Bartels. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, and was a lifelong member. As a child, Clara received her education and helped out on the farm. When she was 13, she started working for people in their homes, doing chores and helping with newborn babies. She met the love of her life, Kermit Amunson, when she was employed at the home of his aunt and uncle, Oscar and Rozella Christman. They were married on Aug. 22, 1943, in Muskogee, Okla., because he was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Camp Gruber. After Kermit returned from World War II, they lived briefly near Soldier on the Lyle Carritt farm, and then lived and farmed south of Ute for more than 50 years. They were blessed with five children, Kenny, Carolyn, Ronnie, Lynette, and Leann. Kermit passed away on Nov. 27, 1996, and Clara moved to Ute in 1997. She then moved to the assisted living home in Lawton, Iowa, in 2010, where she resided until September 2013. Clara found her greatest joy in her family and church. She was a member of St. Paul's Ladies Aid, the Lamplighters, Ladies Choir, Sunday School teacher, and sewed countless quilts for missions. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the 900 Neighborhood Club, the Spirit Singers, and the Red Hat Ladies Society. Clara is survived by her five children, Kenneth and Bette Amunson of Ute, Carolyn and Bruce Yockey of Sioux City, Ronald and Debra Amunson of Soldier, Lynette and Harvey Thies of Ute, and Leann and Brian Henschen of Correctionville; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Lawrence Bartels; sisters, Esther Gran and Halene Frerichs; and all of her sisters and brothers-in-law, being the final aunt on both sides of the family. She was a beautiful Christian lady who left her hand print of love on all that knew her.
