Description	:	Obituary Eastgate Funeral (Apr 7, 2006) Clara Schafer, 94, died April 7, 2006 in a local care center. Services will be held at 2 PM Monday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be in the Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 PM Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to the service at the care center. Clara was born September 28, 1911, on the family farm east of Underwood, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Christina (Braun) Kundert. She grew up and attended a one room country school near Underwood. On October 13, 1935, she married Elmer H. Schafer in Turtle Lake, ND. During the difficult 30's they lived briefly in Washington, Oregon, and Harvey, ND before purchasing a farm four miles south of Underwood in 1941. After retiring in 1972, they moved into Underwood in 1973. Mr. Schafer died on February 8, 1991. In 1996 Clara moved to Bismarck and was currently a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Clara's greatest gift was to make the world a better place through her endless flower gardens and mastering the lost art of tatting. Her quiet smile, faith in God, and everlasting wit will long be remembered by those who knew her. Clara is survived by one daughter, JoAnn Carol West, Suffolk, VA; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale J. and Ellen Schafer, Bismarck, ND; two grandchildren, Steven and Dean Hayden; and one sister, Esther (Paul) Wagner, Salem, OR. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; son-in-law, Robert West; two infant grandchildren, Jerome Allen and Marie Clara Schafer; three sisters, Tillie Wanner, Ida Olson, and Emma Berquist; and two brothers, Theodore and Theofiel. The family of Clara Schafer wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care center for their compassion and kindness showed to Clara and the family during her illness.
