Clara was born Nov. 23, 1902, in Heidal Valley, Gudbrandsdal, Norway, to Knute Sr. and Mari (Pladsen) Sanden. She came with her family to America when she was 6 months old and lived her entire life in the Mabel area. She moved to Valley View Nursing Home in January 1999. Welper, 104, of Houston, formerly of Mabel, Minn., died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. Clara was born Nov. 23, 1902, in Heidal Valley, Gudbrandsdal, Norway, to Knute Sr. and Mari (Pladsen) Sanden. She came with her family to America when she was 6 months old and lived her entire life in the Mabel area. She moved to Valley View Nursing Home in January 1999. On Sept. 5, 1922, she married Harry H. B. Welper in Decorah, Iowa. He later passed away June 10, 1977. Clara attended school in Hesper, Iowa. She was a member of Hesper Lutheran Church, WELCA, the church circle, Mabel Garden Club, and for several years was a volunteer as a Red Cross Gray Lady at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel. Clara is survived by one daughter, Betty James of Houston; one granddaughter, Beverly Gustavson (Gary West) of Rochester, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Scott (Diana) Gustavson of St. Clair, Minn., Betsy Frye and Kraig Gustavson, both of Eagle Lake, Minn.; and nine great- great-grandchildren, Joshua, Courtney, John, Connor, Matthew, Kristen, Travis, Ashley and Caden; and two half-sisters, Calma Sanden and Ruby Erlandson. Clara was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Olaf, Ole and Knute Jr.; and a sister, Mary. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa, with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting the family with arrangements.
