Read More	From the Woodston Argus, Sept 4, 1913: The inhabitants of our little town were horrified when they heard of the tragedy that was enacted last Friday morning when Newt Edson shot and instantly killed his wife at their home in the east part of town, and then took his own life, committing the awful deed with a 38 caliber revolver. Many of the people witnessed the act which took place in the yard at the southwest corner of the house, which place is plainly visible up Main street. That Edson was mentally unbalanced was known by a great many, but none ever dreamed of his condition resulting in such a terrible tragedy. From remarks let drop by him it seems that he had been brooding over the matter for some time and finally came to the determination of committing the deed that morning. He had an insane idea that his wife was not true to him; but everyone knew her to be a perfect lady with morals above reproach and such an idea on his part was entirely imagined. He evidently brooded over the matter so long that it came to be a reality to him, in his insane condition. He had made every preparation to accomplish his purpose, as the night before he had wired all the gates so as to prevent her escape. It seems that he had been making threats that morning and Mrs. Edson had run out of the house to get away from him and he followed her with revolver in hand. As she came out of the house she called for help and Mrs. Triplett, who lives just across the street west, telephoned to central to send help. At the corner of the house Mrs. Edson turned and pleaded with him not to shoot her and by this time Constable Brickell and Mayor Still were on their way to the house, but when Edson saw them coming to interfere, he fired; the bullet striking her in the left breast. He immediately fired two more shots which took effect in the arm and breast. She was killed instantly. Edson then turned the gun on himself, shooting through the left breast just above the heart. He did not fall immediately, and was trying to reload the gun when Brickell and Still came up, thinking to put another bullet in himself, or as some think he might have been preparing to shoot the two men, but before he could reload the gun he fell over, never regaining consciousness and dying a few minutes later. Their little six years old girl was in the yard when the trouble started, but Rena Triplett ran over untied the gate and got her out of the way. When Edson saw her doing this he told her to go home and mind her own business, but she got the little girl safely over to her home, or in the all probability he would have killed the child too. It would have been impossible to have prevented the affair at this time, for the interference of any one at this time would have only made him more determined to kill. Several people down town were looking that way when they heard of the trouble, and saw the shots fired and heard her screams. They rushed up to the house but it was all over with, even by he time Brickell and Still arrived. The bodies were carried into the house and laid on the floor and Coroner Callendar of Stockton was notified. He came down immediately in company with Col. Sweet. A jury composed of W. T. Smither, B. S. Williams, Frank Shutts, H.H. Hollen, W.H. Dennis, and F. L. Murphy was impaneled and an inquisition held, the verdict being homicide and suicide, she coming to her death by gunshot wounds from a 38 caliber revolver fired by her husband, he coming to his death by a gun shot wound from a 38 caliber revolver, self-inflicted. This is the substance of the verdict. The following witnesses were examined to substantiate the fact as stated in the verdict; Mrs. H.L. Triplett, A. Still, J. S. Brickell, and Clark Hinshaw. The revolver used was an old rim fire 38 caliber. On being searched it was found that he had seven other cartridges in his pocket, and about $30 in one. The Edison's have lived in Woodston the past few months and he had been working in the Davis barber shop and while Mr. Davis is gone has had full charge of the shop. Mrs. Edison's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John LaRue of Natoma, were immediately notified, also Mr. Edson's brothers, one who lives here and the others at Stockton and Norton, and a sister living at St. Joseph. Such a terrible tragedy cast a gloom over the entire community, from which it has not entirely recovered. That day business in Woodston was practically at a standstill; every one was too busy discussing the affair to think of business. We read of such tragedies almost daily in the papers, but not until it comes right down to our own town and community, do we give it much thought.
