Oct 14, 1909 - Carroll Times - The funeral of Mrs. Clara Achatz, whose death Thursday evening at 6:30 o'clock we briefly noted last week, took place at 10 o'clock last Saturday morning from SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. A large attendance of old friends of the aged lady and her daughters, followed the remains to the last resting place in "God's acre." Departed, Clara Neutescher, was born near Schletzstadt, Alsace-Lorraine (then a French province) Dec. 5, 1829, and was therefore 79 years, 10 months and 2 days old. She came to America with her parents in 1844, settling at Mendota, Illinois. It was there she was married in 1856 to Herman J. Achatz and to them were born three daughters who now survive their beloved mother: Mrs. Wm. Sontag, Cuba, Kans., and Mesdames Jno. Joest and Chas. G. Herman of this citv, all of whom were at the funeral. The husband died in May 1892. There survives one brother, Alois Neutescher, of Mendota, Illinois, but who could not be present. Phil Heiman of Mt. Carmel, a nephew, and Mrs. John A. Schmitz, of Halbur, a niece and their families, were present. Another niece, Mrs. Anton Stein resides at Valley Falls, Kansas. Mrs. Achatz was a most kindly and charitable lady whom all loved for her motherly, friendly, and neighborly ways and her many acts, of helpfulness to those in distress. She sought to live according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, of which she was a fervent adherent. She died fortified by the receipt of the Holy Viaticum and hoping for divine mercy promised by Him Who said, "I am the ressurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he be dead, shall live again, and I shall give him everlasting life." We believe of her who has just been called after a life well spent, that she has gained "the crown of life" a reward for her trials and sufferings.
