Read More	Clara Olive Bill Sarty 2002 Halifax Chronicle Herald (From the collection of Hazel Starratt) Clara Olive Bill Sarty, 89, Halifax, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 11, 2002. Born in the village of Chimacum, Washington, in 1912 she moved to Santa Rosa, California, following high school. In August, 1934, while on a six month road tour of North America, she visited Evangeline Beach near Wolfville. The afternoon she arrived she met Melbourne Herbert Sarty on the beach and when she departed for California the next day they were engaged. She returned the following August, married in Wolfville and moved to Sydney Mines where Mel was the high school principal. She loved the bustling culture of the 30's Cape Breton mining towns and soon became well-known to many as a lively companion, a keen community worker, and an avid outdoorswoman. In 1944, she moved to Halifax where she raised her family, continued her community work, and exercised her passion for gardening. She held lifelong enthusiasms for reading, stamp and coin collecting, crafts and beach combing and particularly loved spending half of each year with her family at their lakeside cottage near Halifax. When her family had grown, she worked at IWK Hospital for Children. For more than a decade she showered "her" sick children with humour, compassion, and love thus earning the lifelong gratitude of hundreds of young patients and their parents throughout the Maritimes. Her happy disposition, quick wit, unfailing kindness, and generosity will long be remembered and tremendously missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her children and grandchildren: son, Conrad (Patricia), Peter, Steven, and Todd; daughter Karen (Rod) Glover, Edward and Sarah; and son, Derek, Noreen. Following her passing, a family gathering was held at her home. She and Mel, who predeceased her in 1992, will rest in Lone Pine Cemetery, Lapland. Donations may be made in her memory to IWK Health Centre. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
