Visitation will held from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday followed by a vigil service at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Clara was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Hazen, to Charles and Rosetta (Conner) Dolan. Clara was raised by her parents, along with her four older brothers and big sister, Irene, along the banks of the Knife River, on land homesteaded by her grandparents in 1882. Their farmhouse was full of Catholic-Irish pride, her father reading as they gathered around the old coal heater, her mother always able to create a splendid lunch from nothing for anyone who happened by. Politics were part of family discussions. Clara believed as her father said, "You swim the river in November if necessary, in order to vote." Clara graduated from Hazen High School at the age of 16 and remained a staunch supporter of the Bison throughout her life. She wrote letters supporting tax increases for education, and in later years received the Sports Fan of the Year Award, which was a source of great delight to her. Despite academic scholarships, the untimely death of her father and the depression prevented her attendance at college. She wrote teacher's exams and taught in country schools for eight years. Her duties included not only teaching eight grades, but stoking the fire and scrubbing the floor. On Sept. 6, 1941, she married Ervin Albers, truly the love of her life. Although she regretted not being able to go to college, she quickly noted that perhaps she wouldn't have met Ervin, which would have been a far greater loss. Together Clara and Ervin provided an idyllic family life filled with music, humor and love. They hiked in the sandhills and traded stories and poems, their children securely anchored by the two of them. The warmth freely given her family was extended to anyone with whom she came in contact. Clara had a gift for taking interest in others and expressing that concern. She was an avid reader, and instilled that love of reading in her children. A tireless worker, Clara designed and sewed wardrobes for her children, nieces, grandchildren and Barbie. She sewed drapes and quilts, crocheted afghans, hung wallpaper, and re-upholstered furniture. Yet when her young daughter was asked what her mother did, the reply was, "She works for the church." Clara served on Church Council, Altar Society, co-chaired the 50th Anniversary, taught catechism, and served countless meals. Although her church was of utmost importance, she valued most highly that her husband, a non-Catholic, defined her to one of his sisters as "the most Christian person I know." Clara lived a rich and full life until well into her 80s, keeping scrapbooks of her grandchildren and surviving the devastating loss of her beloved Ervin, followed two months later by her treasured son, Rick. In the later years of her life, she suffered the indignities of Alzheimer's disease. Although it is difficult to let one loved so deeply go, we are joyful that she is finally released from this illness. As a family, we have always gathered here in Hazen for Christmas. We feel thankful and blessed in the rightness of her death in this holy season when we can grieve and celebrate together. The day after her burial, her great-granddaughter and namesake, Clare Virginia Bodine, will be baptized in Hazen in St. Martin's Church. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Jerry Bodine and Sheila and Rocky Cofer, all of Hazen, and Beth Albers-Jones and Evan Jones, Winnipeg, Manitoba; her daughter-in-law, Peggy Tomscha Albers, Atlanta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Charles, Terrence, Steve and Pat; her sister, Irene; her husband, Ervin; and her son, Rick.
