Not only do they not always know where their sons or daughters are, they have to survive day to day with the possibility that they may never see their child again. For Mrs. Clara Lampe Bartels, her worries during World War II were six fold. By war’s end six of her sons were in various branches of the service. Erwin Lampe joined the army in January 1942 and was with a medical detachment of a coast artillery battalion in Hawaii and then in the Pacific. Harold Lampe entered the army in March 1943 and was with a photo intelligence detachment in France. Theodore Lampe enlisted in the navy in 1938 and had planned to be out in 1942, but stayed in when war was declared. He is listed in the California World War II casualty list. Clara Lampe Bartels was living at 1726 Brockton, West Los Angeles, California at time of death. Arthur Lampe entered the army six days before the Pearl Harbor attack and was in the Mariana’s. Lavern Lampe joined the navy in November 1942 and was on a ship in the Pacific as a machinists mate. He was on the battleship USS New York and had a grandstand view of the invasion of Okinawa. While under threat of air attack the ship moved to within 3,000 yards of the shore. The crew could easily see exactly where their shells hit. Romaine Lampe, Mrs. Lampe’s only remaining child not already in the service, entered the army. At the end of the war the Lampe boys began to arrive home, one by one until they numbered five. The sixth son, Theodore, did not survive the sinking of his rescue ship. Clara Lampe Bartels’ long vigil was over. For her and many mothers like her, it was a victory filled with pain.
