Description	:	Clare A. Green, 77, of 2601 Wilson, died Monday, July 14 at the Salt Lake City Veterans Administration Medical Center. Mr. Green was born Dec. 8 1908 at Middleton, Wis. , a son of Willis and Fern Green. The family moved to southeastern Montana in 1918. Green, 77, of 2601 Wilson, died Monday, July 14 at the Salt Lake City Veterans Administration Medical Center. Mr. Green was born Dec. 8 1908 at Middleton, Wis. , a son of Willis and Fern Green. The family moved to southeastern Montana in 1918. He graduated from Powder River County High School at Broadus in 1928 and attended the Business Institute in Miles City for one year. In 1930 he filed on his homestead in the Sonnette area. He had worked for the Custer County Extension Agent and post office for several years, then ranched in the Sonnette area before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1941. Mr Green served in the South Pacific and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Miles City and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. Later he was caretaker at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds. He served with the National Guard from its conception in 1948 until 1968 when he retired as Warrant Officer. On Oct 26 1962 he married Dorothy McMillan in Billings and they made their home in Miles City. He was a life member and past commander of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, a member of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge, Masonic Lodge of Broadus and the Cow Town Square Dancers Club. He also worked as a volunteer at the Miles City VAMC. Mr. Green was military contact officer for the American Red Cross for many years. His survivors include his wife of Miles City; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Pat (Barbara) Killen of Powderville, a sister, Ellen Swope of Lone Pine, two stepgrandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18 in the chapel of J.E. Graves Funeral Home. The Rev. Dave Bales will officiate. Interment, with military honors proved by the Montana National Guard Troop A1-163DAC Miles City, will follow in the Custer County Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial may be made to the charity of their choice. ------------------ 1944: Pfc. Clare Green, son of Mrs. Fern Higgins of 420 Atlantic avenue, is taking an active part in the Philippine invasion from reports that have reached his mother. A letter was received by her this morning from a relative on the west coast saying that a broadcast from Hollywood gave out the news that Green has been one of four American soldiers to take a town alone. A dispatch last week told of his part in another attack saying"Nineteen Japanese who made the mistake of stopping for chow died when an American patrol caught up with them. The Japanese at first eluded a platoon and thinking they were safe, stopped to cook rice. Americans picked the trail and crept within 20 feet of the Nipponsese bivouac. They fired a volley which wiped out the group." Pfc. Green was in the group of four. His mother has received a letter of congratulation from the chaplain on his receiving a good conduct medal, and he was recently awarded the expert infantry badge. Before entering the service four years ago, he was a rancher at Sonnette, and at one time in the county agent office here when Paul Lewis was agent. His work now is in the intelligence department. Mrs. Higgins is a nurse at the county hospital.
