CLARENCE MAN SUICIDES Clarence Davis, winner of the Croix de Guerre and distinguished service cross in the World War, committed suicide by hanging at his home in Clarence Sunday noon. Despondency was the cause of the act. A farewell note was found. Davis, as a member of company D, 168th Infantry, on Oct. 14, 1918, braved enemy fire in an attempt to save the life of Sergeant Glenn H. Gray of Amana, who lay wounded not far from the German trenches. He found Gray dead and was severely wounded himself when struck by machine gunfire. He was confined to hospitals until March 19, 1919, and was discharged from the service soon afterward. As a reward for his bravery Davis was decorated by both the French and American governments. Mrs. Davis found the body in her husband's bedroom about 12 o'clock. He had taken the cord from his bathrobe, tied it around his neck and to a bedpost and had dropped to the floor, strangling himself. He has been dead an hour when discovered. Employed by the Standard Oil Company at a local staton, Davis worked nights. Coroner Andrew McCormick found the following note, addressed to the veteran's wife: "Goodbye, Margaret, I hate to leave you this way, but, oh, I am so tired of living with nothing to look forward. You will find my government insurance slips in the safe. "Clarence." Davis was born Feb. 13, 1898, at Clinton. He was a senior in High school when the World War broke out. He enlisted April 12, 1917, in Company D of the First Iowa Infantry at Cedar Rapids and on Sept. 20 became a member of the 168th Infantry in the Rainbow division. Davis was a charter member of Victory Post of the American Legion here. He was defeated for the office of sheriff on the republican ticket a few years ago. Surviving are his widow and three children. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Karl Fauth in charge. Military honors will be paid by the American Legion.--C. R. Gazette.
