He was born Nov. 13, 1917 on a farm northeast of Holdrege, the second of three children of Walford and Elizabeth (Davidson) Swanson. A lifetime resident of Phelps County, Mr. Swanson attended Rural School Districts 48 and 25 before graduating from the Holdrege High School in 1935. On May 1, 1945 he was united in marriage to Helen L. Davis of Alma. He worked most of his adult likf in automobile sales. He started with Kizzier-Anderso Chevrolet, later with the Loar-Leffler Ford dealership, and for the last 15 years with Dannull Engine Service and Auto Sales where he ws employed until his death. Mr. Swanson was a charter member of the F.O.E. "Eagles" Aerie #3132. He served qall the chairs in the local Aerie and all the chairs in the State Aerie, including as president in 1968-69. He was instrumental in establishing the Boys Ranch in Alliance. Mr. Swanson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holdrege; the B.P.O.E. "Elks" Lodge; United Commercial Travelers (U.C.T.); the Optimist Club; and served as treasurer on the board of directors of the Senior Citizens Center. He and his wife. Helen, were crowned King and Quee fpr 1991-92 during the annual Swedish Days. Besides his wife, Helen, survivors include two sons: Franklin "Dee" Swanson and his wife, Marilyn of Holdrege and James A. Swanson and his wife, Beverly of Grand Island; one daughter, Patricia L. DeCamp and her husband, Wayne of Munroe Falls, Ohio; six grandchildren: Cindy D. Beaman and her husband, Douglas of Grand Island, Mark A. Swanson and his wife, Teresa of Omaha, James A. Swanson II and his wife, Pamela of Alda, Cheri M. Swanson of Wood River, and Andrea R. DeCamp and Christopher A. DeCamp, both of Munroe Falls; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas L. Swanson and his wife, Lois of Holdrege; two brothers-in-law: Harley Wells of Holdrege and Sherman F. Davis and his wife, Kathleen of Trivoli, Tex.; two sisters-in-law: Betty Jo Meyer of Maroa, Ill., and Ruth Ellen "Bonnie" Snitzer of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Clara Wells. He will lie in state at the Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege, Monday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
