Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday from Spencer Memorial Presbyterian church in Lemmon. Rev. George Berg officiated. Pall bearers were S. E. Behrmann, C. O. Peterson, Melvin Haugen, Kenneth Krisle, Dwight Owen and G. J. Johnson. Masonic committal rites were conducted at the graveside in Greenhill cemetery. Clarence A. Dyson was born Aug. 22, 1889 at Tate, Neb. He attended elementary school there and completed his high school education at Mapleton, Ia., where the family moved in 1906. In 1908 he entered the employ of a lumber yard at Mitchell, S.D., where he remained for a year. In 1909 he came to the West River country to join his brother and sister who had homesteaded in the Haynes area. A year later upon reaching age 21 he filed his own claim and settled in Perkins county eight miles south of Haynes. He spent about two years working on the Parker Brothers Horse Ranch near Miles City, then returned to his own homestead and developed his operation. Mr. Dyson was married at Miles City Sept. 27, 1917 to Flora Whittman. They established their home on his ranch which they operated until 1934. In addition to ranching he also served as assistant postmaster at Haynes between Jan. 1, 1926 and Sept. 30, 1932. From Nov. 11, 1934 until May, 1935, Mr. Dyson served as assistant clerk for the Agriculture Adjustment Agency in Rapid City. Between June 1, 1935 and Apr. 1, 1938 he was assistant clerk and field supervisor for the Resettlement Agency with headquarters in Rapid City. This agency worked in government land utilization programs. For the next seven months he was assistant clerk for the Bureau of Agricultural Economy at Rapid City. During this time he supervised obliteration, construction and maintenance work and did land appraising. In November of 1938 he returned to Lemmon to begin work as aid of the Soil Conservation Service in Lemmon which supervised Land Utilization projects in this area. He was promoted to project manager Jan. 1, 1942 and worked in this capacity until he was promoted to Range Manager under the Forest Service Mar. 27, 1955. He continued in this capacity until he retired in August, 1959. From then until his death he served as office manager for the Grand River Grazing association which he had helped found in 1940 and of which he served as a director for many years. Mr. Dyson was one of the founding directors of the Lemmon Junior Livestock Show when it was established in 1942. He served as treasurer of the association from that time until his death. He was active in the Lemmon Lions club and served as president in 1948-49. He was a member of the South Dakota Section of the American Society of Range Management and was a charter member of the South Dakota Section of the National Soil Conservation Society of America. He was a member of the Lemmon Chamber of Commerce from its reestablishment in 1949 and served on many of its committees. Mr. Dyson affiliated with the Masonic Order at an early age. He served in all the chairs of the Blue Lodge, the Royal Arch Masons and the Lemmon Commandery of Knights Templar. He was secretary-treasurer of the Royal Arch Masons and the Knights Templar at the time of his death. He was a member of the Yelduz Shrine Temple of Aberdeen and was a charter member of the West River Shrine Club. Previously serving this organization as president he was secretary at the time of his death. Mrs. Dyson died Jan. 21, 1946. In addition to maintaining his home in Lemmon, Mr. Dyson also had a summer cabin at Shadehill Lake where he spent much time. He gardened extensively at the lake. Surviving are two sons, Dr. John Dyson, of Champaign, Ill., and Clarence A. Dyson, jr., of Seattle; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a brother, James Dyson of Lemmon; a sister, Mrs. H.L. (Hattie) Jacobsen of Haynes.
