Clarence Edgar Holmes, a son of Robert and Hannah (Stone) Holmes, was born in Buffalo County, Nebraska, on May 30, 1884. The family moved to Chase County, Nebraska, near Champion, in 1887. In 1901, Mr. Holmes moved with his parents to a farm near Paoli, where they remained for a short time before moving to Holyoke. After living in Holyoke for about a year the family moved to what is now the Dale Colglazier farm southeast of town. On May 22, 1910, Mr. Holmes was united in marriage to Cora Edmisten. To this union two daughters were born, both of whom survive. In 1923, Mr. Holmes and his brother, J.A. Holmes, formed a partnership and bought the Ford agency from the late Bruce Waln. The business was located in the building which now houses the Brown Motor Co., Inc. The Holmes Bros. partnership was dissolved in 1934. Mr. Holmes then became custodian at the Phillips County High School and a few years later was employed as a powerhouse attendant by the Town of Holyoke. He held this position for a number of years. Surviving are his wife, Cora; two daughters, Esther (Mrs. Fred Hendricksen), Gooding, Idaho, and Helen (Mrs. William H. Becker), Boise, Idaho; one brother, Jess A. Holmes, Holyoke; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mr. Holmes in death were his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
