Read More	FARMER SERIOUSLY INJURED FALLS ON PITCH FORK HANDLE Undergoes Major Operation At The Decatur County Hospital" Clarence Monahan, 29, suffered an accident Wednesday evening about 5:30 o'clock that has caused his family and friends much concern. He had just finished pitching hay from the loft of the barn and had thrown the fork down, the tines of which stuck in the ground, leaving the handle sticking up. Mr. Monahan had mud on his shoes which made them slick and caused him to slip and fall as he came down from the hay mow. In his fall he struck the handle of the fork which entered his body at the rectum and went on through as high as the waistline puncturing the intestines and tearing the colon from the membranes and linings and stopping between the intestines and the back. He called to his wife who went running to him. He told her to go for help as he would not be able to make it to the house alone. She ran to the Bud Hightshoe home and before she could return Mr. Monahan had extricated the fork handle and was at the house. He was taken to a doctor who upon examination saw the necessity of an immediate operation. He was then taken to the Decatur County Hospital where the operation was performed. He was on the operating table about two hours and has shown a good reaction from the effects. From the first food was given through the veins and by Saturday he was able to take liquids. He is showing improvement and entertains hopes of recovery. Everything is in his favor since he is a young man of clean habits and in perfect physical condition to combat complications. He has never indulged in dissipation that has in any way weakened his body. Mr. and Mrs. Monahan have resided on the Wilber Prall farm in the Evergreen neighborhood about 51/2 miles southwest of Lamoni for the past 4 years. Mrs. Monahan is going to take over the management of the farm and Mr. Prall is hiring a man to do the work until Mr. Monahan is able to be back on the job. Mr. and Mrs. John Dowding, farmers from near Palmyra, Neb., parents of Mrs. Monahan and the mother of Mr. Monahan, with his brother, Will of Bennett, Neb., came Thursday to the Wilber Prall home where they remained until Friday. They are giving every assistance possible to help with the adjustment of things. The latest report from Mr. Monahan as we go to press Wednesday afternoon is that he is doing very good, is able to take a little nourishment and showing some gain. We are happy to be able to make this report since the whole community has been very concerned about his condition.
