Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of George with Rev. Tony Metz officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George. Clarence Emerson Dickmann, the fourth son of Charles and Anna (Fick) Dickmann, was born on December 28, 1918. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hull, Iowa. He grew to manhood on the family farm, and received his education at the Wheeler #9 country school, and the George High School. With the outbreak of World War II, Clarence was inducted into the U.S. Army in February 1942. He served with the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion which participated in the Omaha Beach invasion at Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Among his awards were the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medals. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. On September 8, 1948, Clarence and Margaret Nell "Skipper" DeVries were united in marriage at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In May of 1949 he and "Skipper" became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church, George, Iowa. Through the years, Clarence was devoted to his church, served on its council and various committees, and raised his family with a strong belief in God, a strong work ethic, and a life of integrity. The couple farmed southwest of George until they moved to Boyden, Iowa in 1987. Clarence's vocation remained dear to his heart. He was a long time shipper of livestock to the Sioux City Stockyards. He never tired of nurturing the soil and seeing the beauty it brought forth. Also, he enjoyed traveling in many states with his family on their annual vacations, driving John Deere tractors, and visiting and sharing meals with the elderly. Becoming a grandpa at the age of 70 was a special blessing for which he was truly grateful. Clarence went to his eternal rest on January 19, 2010 after a long and fulfilling life in his roles as husband, dad, grandpa, soldier and farmer. Left to share his life's memories are his wife, two sons and their wives, Charles and Teresa Dickmann, Dr. Michael and Bridget Dickmann, and three cherished grandchildren, Kaitlyn, C. Zachary, and Jacob, all of George. Also surviving is his sister, Mildred and her husband William Zenk, Boyden, Iowa, and sister-in-law Mildred Dickmann, Hull, Iowa, nieces, nephews and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, a grandson Anthony Floyd Dickmann, three brothers, Alfred, Robert and Theodore, and two sisters-in-law, Elsie and Frances Dickmann.
