Description	:	Clarence was the son of Robert V. Houston and a grandson of both Hugh M. Houston and Maj. D. A. Covington. He married Miriam Stamps, daughter of Capt. E. R. Stamps in June of 1904 in Raleigh, N.C. At the time of his marriage he was described as a "prominent young merchant of Monroe [N.C.]". Educated at Trinity (now Duke) and later the Maryland College of Pharmacy, he was a pharmacist and partner with his brother, D. A. Houston at Houston's Drug Store in Monroe. Educated at Trinity (now Duke) and later the Maryland College of Pharmacy, he was a pharmacist and partner with his brother, D. A. Houston at Houston's Drug Store in Monroe. He would later serve as Mayor of Monroe and was still serving in that capacity when he died of wounds he administered himself. Though his death was ruled a suicide his obituary explained that he had been in "wretched health so long that his mind suddenly became unhinged and he followed the only suggestion that for the moment presented itself." The town was in shock over his death as they had originally hoped that he would recover from the wounds. The writer of the obit, one of the Beasley brothers, said "...there will never be a harsh word or thought for Clarence Houston because in his time of dire suffering he felt the impulse to seek a way of relief that comes to otherwise normal men only after their hold upon themselves has been loosed by suffering." -from "The Monroe Journal", Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1925, p.1. Survivors were listed as: his wife, four children (not named in obit), brothers, D. A. Houston of Raleigh and Hugh Houston of Arkansas; sisters, Mrs. Ella Houston and Mrs. A. A. Heath; half brother, Robert S. Houston; half sisters, Mrs. R. L. Payne and Mrs. Phil Fisher and his step-mother, Mrs. R. V. Houston.
