Bathed in the flashing lights of nine fire engines, some two dozen of his fellow Raymond firefighters stood on the lawn, saluting him. Two days later, on March 15, C. J. Schweitzer. a firefighter for 27 years, died of cancer. He was 65. Today firefighters will host a benefit to help pay the medical bills of a man they say people admired, a fun loving, modest man who liked helping others. Schweitzer raised eight children - making sure to teach each to fish - and doted on 13 grandkids with Mary, his wife of 44 years. She said C. J. thought of all his fellow volunteer firefighters as family. Said Raymond Fire Chief Shane Cuttlers, "He was kind of like a father figure." Schweitzer was twice named Raymond's firefighter of the Year and once Nebraska's Emergency Medical Technician of the Year. He held most every leadership position within his department. He also served on the Raymond Rural Fire District board, the states' Critical Incident Stress Management team and taught CPR. Raymond Firefighters said he kept them on the latest technology and techniques, always looking to the next budget or new idea. A graduate of Lincoln's Cathedral High School, Schweitzer worked a variety of jobs, from plumbing and heating and air conditioning. He also served in the Nebraska Air National Guard. In his late 40's, Schweitzer's experience earned him a job as a mechanical engineer for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He worked there until he was 62, then retired to try growing wine grapes, nut tree and berries. By then he had been diagnosed with cancer, had already begun losing the strength gained from lifting weights in his basement all those years. Six months ago, his health took a final turn. He'd lost 60 lbs. He seldom saw friends for fear of catching a virus. His son, Chuck, a Lincoln fire inspector, said that even as his father's health slipped away, he remained more absorbed by others' concerns than his own. "He was not a man of a whole lot of words," said Chuck Schweitzer. "But when he said something, it truly meant something." On Mar. 13,Raymond's firefighters stepped inside C. J. Schweitzer's house, one by one, taking their boots off so as not to dirty the carpet. They told him he would always be one of them. They shook his hand. He hugged each one a goodbye. About 48 hours later, Mary Schweitzer found her husband resting more peacefully that usual. She placed her fingers on his wrist, then to his neck; she leaned her ear to his chest.
