Burial will follow at Beaver Catholic Cemetery near Granger, Iowa. Clarence was born June 19, 1942, in New Hampton, Iowa, to Merle and Florence (Wittenburg) Thayer. He married Catherine Ann Mellick on June 20, 1964 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, Iowa. They made their home in Cedar Rapids where their six children were born. Clarence was transferred to Des Moines and they raised their family in the Des Moines/Granger area. Clarence was a mechanic for the US Postal Service for 25 years, retiring in 2008. He was a past union president for the UAW in Cedar Rapids and a Union Steward for the US Postal Service in Des Moines. Clarence enjoyed reading, fishing, bird watching, and traveling. He will be remembered for making people laugh and his orneriness. Clarence is survived by his two sons, David (Noelle) Thayer of Des Moines, Iowa and James (Jacki) Thayer of Norwalk, Iowa; four daughters, Ann (Doug) Beavers of Dallas Center, Iowa, Mary (Dave) Steim of Ankeny, Iowa, Diane (Scott) Kruse of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Sue (Trevor) Wulf of Hudson, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, sister, Donna (Don) Tjaden of Iowa City, Iowa; and brother, Don (Su) Thayer of Iowa City, Iowa and his twin brother Clair Thayer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Catherine Ann and two brothers Merle "Bud" Thayer and William “Bill” Thayer. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 pm Thursday, June 11, at Iles-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Obituary and photo published by Iles Funeral Home.
