M. "Shorty" 1875-1936 Posted By: Teddy Van Hoosen Date: 8/2/2007 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR C. M. CLARK SUNDAY Veteran Barber and Band Man of Colfax died Thursday Funeral services for Clarence M. Clark, veteran barber and band man of this city, were held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church. Mr. Clark was better known as "Shorty" to his many friends. He was especially fond of music and willingly gave of his time and talents on any occasion. Many a boy has been given help by Mr. Clark without ever a thought of compensation. He was of a jovial nature and even after his health failed, he always had a kind word for everyone. Clarence Michael Clark passed away at 5 o'clock Thursday morning, July 9, 1936. Mr. Clark was confined to his home for the past six months with complication of asthma and Brights Disease. He was 61 years, one month of age at the time of his death. He was born at Dexter, Iowa, June 10, 1895 [typed as written should be 1875] and came to Colfax in 1902 where he lived until his death. He was the son of Arthur and Sarah Smith and was adopted by his grandparents, Mary Ann and Charles Clark in infancy. He was united in marriage to Jennie Lamb on Sept. 30, 1935 at Colfax, Ia. To this union were born four children, one son, Donald Clark, preceding him in death. Mr. Clark was a member of the First Methodist Church of Colfax. He was converted and united with the church in 1927. Those left to mourn him are his wife, Mrs. Jennie Clark, three children, Mrs. Ray Runyan at Colfax, Wm. Clark of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Robert Clark, who resides at home with his mother, also his three grandchildren, three sisters and one brother, who reside in Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. D. W. Hurst, Mrs. Fred Jorgenson, Mrs. J. F. O'Sullivan. The latter attended his funeral along with many other relatives and friends. Mr. Clark will be remembered as a loving father, a loyal citizen and a true friend to all whom he knew. His pleasing personality and sterling qualities have won for him the love and esteem of a wide circle of friends who deeply mourn his departure. Mr. Clark was connected with the Colfax Band and took an active part in the musical affairs of the city. Mr. Clark was the oldest barber being in business for the past thrity years. He made a brave struggle for life, and every possible aid was given him. May we like him, so live that when the summons comes to join that innumberable caravan that leads to that mysterious realm where each shall take his chamber in the silent Halls of Death, go though not like the quarry slave at night scourged from his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust. Approach the grave like one that wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Methodist Church with Rev. Nye and Rev. Bukoutz officiating. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Van Dyke, Gomer Williams and Mrs. Earl Plummer with Wm. Cubit at the piano. The pall beareres were Sam Jones, John Evans, G. E. Tilton, Ed O'Neil, Harry Darrock and E. S. Meckley.
