This community was shocked last Wednesday by the rapid spreading of the news that Judge Owen had sustained a stroke of apoplexy and that his life was despaired of. He lived until evening never gaining consciousness. Clarence P. Owen, son of Philander Owen, was born in this place March 31, 1844, and with the exception of a few years spent in the service of the government, in Iowa, during the early seventies, he has spent his life here. This community was shocked last Wednesday by the rapid spreading of the news that Judge Owen had sustained a stroke of apoplexy and that his life was despaired of. He lived until evening never gaining consciousness. Clarence P. Owen, son of Philander Owen, was born in this place March 31, 1844, and with the exception of a few years spent in the service of the government, in Iowa, during the early seventies, he has spent his life here. Most of the town offices have been administered by him, and for the past 20 years he has been moderator of the annual town meeting. He represented the town in 1802 and served the county as assistant judge from 1886 to 1890. He was a justice of the peace, overseer of the poor and county auditor at the time of his death. Although universally esteemed as a public officer, Judge Owen was at his best as a neighbor and friend. He was first to visit a home where sickness or death had entered, and scarce a family has not felt his unstinted generosity. Possessed of an habitually optimistic temperament, he had the power to impart his sunny disposition to others; and many witnessed the cheering words of Judge Owen. About 400 people gathered at the Congregational church to pay their tribute to his memory. The service was under the direction of the Masons, and was conducted by. Rev. R. L. Sheaff of Barton."
