Description	:	Clarence Raymond Calkins Clarence Calkins died Jan. 4, 1999 of heart disease. He was born Oct. 5, 1910 in Garrison, ND. to Clarence Calkins Sr. and Zetta Monroe Calkins. In 1934 he married Mildred Erb and in 1942 they moved their family to the Tacoma area, where he worked at the shipyard. He followed in his father's footsteps as a carpenter and they also shared a passion for fishing. As a young man he organized and rode in rodeo's. He also trained saddle horses. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where for many years, he was a trustee.... Read More	Clarence Raymond Calkins Clarence Calkins died Jan. 4, 1999 of heart disease. He was born Oct. 5, 1910 in Garrison, ND. to Clarence Calkins Sr. and Zetta Monroe Calkins. In 1934 he married Mildred Erb and in 1942 they moved their family to the Tacoma area, where he worked at the shipyard. He followed in his father's footsteps as a carpenter and they also shared a passion for fishing. As a young man he organized and rode in rodeo's. He also trained saddle horses. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where for many years, he was a trustee. He helped in the construction of the original church building and continued to volunteer his help with the repair and maintenance of the church until recent days. He also participated in the building of many other Lutheran churches in Wash. and Alaska. He was very generous with his time, talent, and resources, not only to the Lord, but to his family, friends, and neighbors. He especially enjoyed sharing his fishing catches with others. He was a member of the carpenter's union for over 50 years. He was also a member of the International Lutheran Laymen's League and the Aid Assoc. for Lutherans. He was preceded in death by his parents, both sisters, both brothers, daughter Sharon Swanson, sons-in-law Gordon Swanson and Richard Viertel. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons, Richard, Donald (Janet); daughters, Lorraine George (Michael) and Marilyn Viertel; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School. Committal service at 11 A.M. Thurs. at Fir Lane Cemetery.
