Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Harvey Johnson and Ryan Wegenast officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery in Glenvil. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island. Clarence was born Feb. 11, 1924, to Fredrick and Louise (Berch) Wegenast on a farm near Edgeley, N.D. He was the youngest of 11 children. He married Esther Dockter in November 1952. She preceded him in death in 2001. Survivors of his immediate family include his daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Kirk Romine of Grand Island, Lisa and Greg Carter of Alliance and Stephanie and Scott Kurcz of Omaha; sons and daughter-in-law, Timothy Wegenast and Steve and Sarah Wegenast, all of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As a farm boy, he attended Ray Township country school a mile from where he lived. Graduating from eighth grade, he attended Edgeley High School and was active in the National Guard for one year. After high school he entered Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. In 1947, he volunteered as a short-term builder for Lutheran Mission in Papua, New Guinea, where a team of 10 young men applied their skills in rebuilding the war-torn mission stations following the Japanese occupation of the islands. He then attended Colorado State College and obtained a degree in industrial arts and education. In 1964 after 16 years of mission service with the Lutheran Society Clarence, Esther and their three children returned to the United States where they furloughed in Moorhead, Minn., and Fargo, N.D. Clarence then prepared himself for another career, this one with Lutheran Hospital and Homes. He worked as an activity director at the Central Dakota Nursing Home in Jamestown, N.D., where the family lived for two years. Ever a teacher, he applied for a teaching position with the Bismarck Job Corps in 1967. This lasted until the Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Hastings, Neb., urged him to join the work force there in the capacity of property manager of its 700 or so apartments. The family moved to Hastings in 1968. Five years later, in 1972, Clarence accepted the challenge as a nursing home administrator and the family moved to Alliance where he accepted the position of administrator. In 1986 he became administrator at the Good Samaritan Center in Scribner where he retired in 1992. He and Esther chose to retire in Grand Island near their children. Through the years, Clarence was involved in civic and church affairs serving on church councils, evangelism committees and choir. He served two terms as president of the Alliance Rotary Club. In Scribner and Grand Island, he served as president of the local branch of Lutheran Brotherhood and was a member of the Grand Island Gideon Camp. He enjoyed playing golf with his family. Many times during his work of administration, he was called to fill in for pastors. Always a builder at heart, he turned handyman in his retirement years for the elderly and enjoyed many hours in his workshop making projects. He drove the bus for Messiah's pre-school and was actively involved with the Gideon Bible Society and Habitat for Humanity. In 1996 he spent a month at St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, helping with rebuilding hurricane-damaged roofs. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three sisters and seven brothers. Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church or the Gideon Bible Society.
