Clarence Sybesma was the third child of 12 born to Sam and Caroline (Faber) Sybesma on March 12, 1925 in Lebanon, IA. He was baptized at a young age in the Ireton Christian Reformed Church. He started school in Iowa and in 1935, at the age of 9, his family moved to New Holland, SD. Clarence graduated from the 8th grade. In 1940 another move took them to Brule County north of Platte, SD. As a young man, he did custom combining with his brothers and cousins in the South. On December 28, 1951 he was united in marriage to Clara Bolkema in Rock Valley, IA. Clarence continued some custom farming and rented land near Platte. They eventually bought their own farm seven miles north of Platte and lived there until 1990, when they retired and moved into Platte. Clarence served on the Platte Christian School Board several terms and on the Dakota Christian School Board. He valued Christian education and felt it was important for his children. He remained a member of the Christian Reformed Church all his life. As a young man he loved farming and in retirement years he enjoyed gardening, reading, wood working and building both Martin and Wren houses. Grateful for having shared in Clarence's life: his wife of over 61 years, Clara Sybesma of Platte, SD; daughter-in-law, Jean Sybesma of Platte, SD, Vern and Linda Sybesma of Centennial, CO, Karen and John Doolaard of Holland, MI, Randy and Carla Sybesma of Platte, SD, and Sheri Brouwer of Visalia, CA; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 sisters: Carol Vanden Bos, Jean Huisjen, Anna Mae Lubben, Gertrude Baker and Milly Weeber; and brother, Sam Sybesma, Jr. Clarence was preceded in death by: his son, Dale; his parents, Sam and Caroline; 3 sisters: Bertha Flietstra, Clara Flietstra and Darlene Vanden Berg; and 2 brothers: Marion and Stanley.
