Scheibner, affectionately known as C.W., passed away on January 18th 2012 in Brooks, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease C.W. was born in Gem Alberta on March 10th 1920 in the farmhouse of his parents Henry John and Annie Bell who homesteaded from the State of Washington in 1914. C.W. was predeceased by parents and four of his five siblings Viola, Maurice, Rosie and Lawrence. C.W. was a passionate farmer before retiring to an acreage outside of Bassano in 1978. He was involved in the family farm from an early age and with his brother Lawrence formed L.C.S Ranches Ltd. in the late 1960’s and farmed and ranched until passing the business on to Lee and Glen Scheibner in 1977. C.W. was a typical farmer who needed to be a mechanic, carpenter, plumber, surveyor, welder, veterinarian and cowboy to get things done. He was well known for his ability to overbuild something such as the recreational trailer that would have survived any off road camping trip. C.W. spent 4 years in the artillery services of the Canadian army during World War 2 with time overseas as a gun layer on a howitzer with the 24th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery supporting the Canadian 6th Division on active duty with the American army and the August 1943 recapture of Kiska Island from the Japanese within the Aleutian Islands in the northwest pacific. C.W. was active within the Gem community with a strong interest in supporting various sports and community events. He was proud of being 14 years old, playing senior baseball and still fitting into the uniform 40 years later. He was very active in the Gem Presbyterian Church, curling club and hockey, one of his passions, and willing at any time to discuss the dangerous Scheibner hockey line in the late 1930’s and early 40’s. He was always available to assist members of the community in time of need. C.W spent many years as a hockey coach and as a curler and bonspieler, finally hanging up the broom at the ripe old age of 88.
