Hope and Frances McDonald OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, February 15, 1923 INJURIES PROVE FATAL With deep regret we note the death of Mr. C. Y. Hope, which occurred at the Yocom hospital in Chariton Tuesday noon, Feb. 13. It will be remembered that he was injured on Feb. 4th in a wreck which occurred on the Rock Island railroad a few miles north of Chariton. While it was known that his injuries were of a very serious nature, yet all hoped that he could recover. For a time his condition seemed somewhat improved, but in a few days complications arose which his weakened system was unable to overcome, and after ten days of intense suffering he passed peacefully away on Tuesday noon at 12:40 o'clock. The remains were removed to his home on North 12th street where a brief funeral service, conducted by Rev. E. W. Curtis, of the United Brethren church, was held on Wednesday forenoon at 11:30 o'clock, and at noon the same day the body was taken to Birmingham, where funeral services will be held at the home of his brother, M. D. Hope, this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, under the auspices of the Masonic order, after which he will be laid to rest by the side of his first wife in the Birmingham (Maple Hill) cemetery. Clarence Y. Hope was born near Birmingham, Van Buren county, Ia., on April 6, 1873, and died February 13, 1923, aged 49 years, 10 months and 7 days. On August 25, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Glotfelty. To them two daughters were born, one dying in infancy. The other, Miss Hazel H. Hope, resides at Valley Junction. His wife passed away May 18, 1917, and he was again married on Nov. 28, 1922, less than three months ago, to Mrs. Jessie E. Avitt, of this city. Besides his wife and daughter he is survived by his mother, Mrs. W. H. Hope, of Valley Junction, and by one brother, M. D. Hope, of Birmingham, and three sisters, Mrs. Charles Conlee, of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. E. R. Byers, of Valley Junction; and Mrs. Lee Corey, of Birmingham. All of these near and dear ones were in attendance at the last sad rites except Mrs. Byers, who was with him a few days preceding his death, but was prevented from attending the funeral by sickness in her family. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends, who will mourn his tragic death. He was a member of the Masonic order of Valley Junction and of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Chariton. Most of his early life was spent in and around Birmingham, where he grew to manhood. He had worked for the Rock Island railroad as a conductor for about twenty-four years, the last six or seven years being spent in and around Chariton, with headquarters at this place. He was highly regarded by all who knew him, and was a kind and loving husband and father. He possessed a genial disposition and was well liked by his fellow workers and associates. The deepest sympathy of the community goes out to the grief stricken ones.
