Description	:	Grinnell Herald (IA) Clarissa E Whipple was born in Chesterfield, IL, 19 Aug 1844. Her father, Josiah Whipple reared in Massachusetts, was a zelous Congregationist; he kept a station on the underground railroead in anti-war days, and when threats bore hard, kept a heavy corn knife under the head of his bed as a measure of prudence. Read More	Grinnell Herald (IA) Clarissa E Whipple was born in Chesterfield, IL, 19 Aug 1844. Her father, Josiah Whipple reared in Massachusetts, was a zelous Congregationist; he kept a station on the underground railroead in anti-war days, and when threats bore hard, kept a heavy corn knife under the head of his bed as a measure of prudence. The daughter was as brave and unselfish as her sire. She graduated at Mt Holyoke in 1865, and taught before and after her marriage to Melville W Rew, which took place 18 Jun 1867. In 1870 they settled in Wayne Co, IA, where Mr Rew farmed successfully until 1882, when he died. In 1896 the family came to Grinnell, wherethe three children have graduated from the college. For many years Mrs Rew was state treasurer of the WBMI. The cause of missions had no more devoted friend. She died yesterday afternoon at her home on Broad street. The funereal services will be held this afternoon at 3:00, and the body taken to Corydon to be laid at rest. Melville W Rew 26 Feb 1836 - 20 Nov 1882
