Description	:	My mother's father, Frank Paxton, was born June 25, 1831. Her mother, Clarissa St. John was born November 25, 1837. They were married in Lebanon, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati. They came by covered wagon to Tama County, Iowa. The Paxton's had eleven children: George, Agusta De France, Margaret Crowley, Andrew, Johnnie, Ella, Bessie, Stella Kent, William, Rhoda Dwigans, and Charles. When Rhoda, my mother, was four years old she nearly died with diphtheria. Johnnie, Ella, and Bessie all died of that disease within a two-week period of time. The Paxton's had eleven children: George, Agusta De France, Margaret Crowley, Andrew, Johnnie, Ella, Bessie, Stella Kent, William, Rhoda Dwigans, and Charles. The same winter Margaret Crowley lost a daughter in Adair County from the same malady. The Paxton's had a farm two or three miles from Montour, Iowa and also a wood lot along the Iowa River. The early settlers liked to settle near rivers. They got their water from the river (streams weren't polluted then) and could cut logs for their houses. Later immigrants came after saw mills were set up, and were able to make houses of boards. The trees also furnished wood for the fireplace. Frank Paxton cut walnut logs from the wood lot, and a cabinet maker in Marshalltown made a bureau from it. It was beautiful. Frank Paxton's father was Amos Paxton, born December 1, 1804 in London County, Virginia. His mother was Betsy Bowser [Grandma Ila had "Betsy" in her information, other sources have "Nancy" as her name], born 1805 in Pennsylvania. They are both buried at Montour, Iowa. Clarissa St. John's parents were Joseph St. John and Margaret Shreck. They came to Warren County, Ohio in 1855. Frank Paxton died April 26, 1904. Clarissa Paxton died May 26, 1923. Both are buried in Montour, Iowa. Frank Paxton's brother, Samuel, married Clarissa St. John's sister, Kezia. --Ila Dwigans Caviness 1983
