Clarke was about 2 years old and was taken to the office every day in a buggy. Clarke graduated from Melcher High School in May 1927 and attended Merganthaler Linotype School in Chicago, Illinois. After he graduated he returned to Melcher and worked at the paper. After his military service during WWII he returned again to Melcher and ran the newspaper after his parents' died. He sold the Melcher-Union to JoAnn Roberts and Ruth Kennedy in 1948, after 30 years owning the Melcher Union. He continued in the newspaper newspaper business in Excelsior Springs, Missouri and then moved back to Boone, Iowa. He then worked for the Register and Tribune in the Commercial Department until he
