He was born April 9, 1932 in Ottumwa to George William and Anges [sic] Knox Heckart. He married Barbara Smith on Feb. 16, 1951 in Ottumwa. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1950, he later attended Chillicothe Business School for two years. He was a Korean Conflict veteran having served on the U.S.S. Florikan. He was a sales representative for IBM and Stenograph Corporations, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Eddyville Masonic Lodge #74 A.F.&A.M., American Legion, and was a 4-H leader and little league coach while in Eddyville. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Claudia J. Christianson of Arena, Kansas and Monica D. Collins of Frontenac, Kansas; a son, Benjamin A. Heckart of Danville, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and a brother Charles Heckart of Truth of [sic] Consequences, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fred Heckart. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Brethren Church in Ottumwa, the Rev. Cynthia Taylor and George Harvey officiating. Burial will be in the Shaul Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation is open after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home followed by family visitation until 9 p.m. Pallbearers will be Roland Stewart, Mac Christy, Dwight Jones, Jack Carr, Duane and Craig Akers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals.
