Read More	Claude William "Skip" Mottram January 16, 1940 – August 1, 2011 Skip Mottram was born January 16, 1940 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Claude and Mildred Mottram. He grew up in St. Paul with his two brothers, Patrick and Michael and his sister, Mary. Skip graduated from St. Mary's University in Winona, MN in 1962, then returned to St. Paul to teach at his alma mater, Cretin High School. In 1965, he moved to Chicago, IL, where he attended DePaul University, graduating with his Master's Degree in Mathematics, while also teaching at St. Patrick and Farragut High Schools. In 1971, Skip was selected to participate in a National Science Foundation Institute for post-graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. Skip married Della Husman in 1967. In spite of being born and raised a "city boy", he was drawn to the mountains of Colorado, so Skip and Della moved to Grand Junction in 1968 - just to try it out for a year or two. That was 43 years ago. Skip fell in love with the terrain of the western slope. He loved camping in the mountains and back-packing in the canyons of Utah. He was happiest when sharing those adventures with his friends and family. Skip taught for Mesa County School District #51 for 31 years. He taught mathematics to students at Orchard Mesa Middle School and East Middle School. Then he expanded his repertoire and taught mathematics and physics at Central High School. He was loved and respected by his students and his colleagues wherever he was. Skip was always an advocate for the rights of teachers locally and statewide. He served as president, chief negotiator and political action coordinator for the Mesa Valley Education Association. He was named Mesa County School District #51 Teacher of the Year three times during his career. Skip was also involved in many community organizations. He served on the Boards of Directors of the Mesa Land Trust and the Aspinall Foundation. His interest in politics began in his undergraduate years and continued to be his avocation. He was chairman of the Mesa County Democratic Party from 2001 - 2005 and treasurer from 1995 - 2000. Skip is survived by his wife, Della, and his three sons and their families: Jon (Stephanie), Josie and Andrew; Stephen (Kris), Billy and Bryan; and Keith (Kristin), Jack, Gavin and Lila. Other survivors include his brother, Pat (Lainie) and nephews, Christopher, Peter, and Alex; sister, Mary, and his niece, Brittany. Skip was preceded in death by his brother, Michael. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 5 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 790 26 1/2 Road. Visitation and vigil services will be held at IHM Thursday, August 4, at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Mesa Land Trust, 1006 Main Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
