CLAUDE WORLEY Fell Under the Wheels of a Coal Car and Was Crushed So That He Died in a Few Hours - Fate of Young Man a Deep Sorrow to Hundreds - Funeral This Morning. Mr. Claude Worley, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Worley of Monroe, died at a little past ten o'clock Wednesday morning from the effects of terrible wounds that he had received by falling under the wheels of a coal car on the Monroe yards that morning. The accident occurred right about twelve o'clock the night before. The regular train coming from the north was late that night and came in pretty soon after the accident. Mr. Worley was taken on this to the Charlotte Sanatorium. It was perhaps two hours from the time he was hit until he arrived in the hospital, having in the meantime the prompt attention of Monroe physicians. No effort whatever was made to operate on him, as the physicians decided that it would be impossible for him to stand the additional shock or that it would do any good. The young man's mother and other relatives hurried to Charlotte by automobile early in the morning, reaching there by five o'clock, and remained with him till the end. There was no eye witness to the tragedy, and all that is known definitely is what the young man himself told his brother, Mr. Will Worley and others. He was assisting in the switching that night on the yard, though his own work was on the line, and had been put in that night in the place of another. His duty was to catch the cars as they were thrown on the side track by the switch engine and lock the brakes to hold them, as the track is on an incline toward the west from which end the engine was working. One car had been thrown in, and this he "chunked," and waited for the next one. When it was thrown in he climbed upon the end next to the engine and found that the brake on the end did not work. Going to the other end next to the stationary car, he climbed up toward the brake, but his foot slipped and he fell between the cars, and astride the track. Both cars started to roll back from the concussion when they hit, and the truck of the car opposite the one he had fallen from mashed his left side. By a tremendous effort he then rolled himself off the track before the next truck reached him. The left shoulder and arm were broken and the left leg in several places between the knee and the hip and a hole was torn in the lower cavity of the body. The groans of the poor boy brought some of the men on the yard quickly to his aid. They found his left arm twisted behind the back and the left leg twisted up and lying limp upon the body. He did not seem to suffer so much as is usual for so terrible a wound, and though opiates were administered, he never lost consciousness until fifteen or twenty minutes before his death. Because of this he was exceedingly hopeful and did not seem to fully realize the extent of his wounds. However, when told of his serious condition, and that he was not likely to live long, he bravely set about meeting the issue of death. Rev. E. K. McLarty called at the hospital and to him as well as to his mother, Claude expressed the satisfaction that he could die in peace and without fear. He had lived a straight boy and he died a brave and fearless man. The remains were brought home on the evening train Wednesday. The funeral was postponed till this morning to await the arrival of Mr. Harry Worley, a brother of the deceased, from Little Rock. All day yesterday a constant stream of friends visited the residence to pay their respects and to express sympathy to the bereaved family. The deceased was born and reared in Monroe and was 22 years old. he was a member of the Methodist church, and was universally popular with his acquaintances. He was a general favorite with the railroad men. Besides his parents he is survived by four brothers and five sisters. The funeral was held by Dr. Guerney and Rev. Mr. Abernethy. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. A. Rice, DeWitt Alexander, A. B. Crowell, Frank Griffith, G. C. Richardson and J. B. Simpson. The Monroe Journal Monroe, NC Friday, April 9, 1915 Page 1
