The Burlington Hawkeye, June 16, 1926, page 1 FOUND DROWNED IN RIVER Both Bodies Located Near Sunken Boat Clark Brockway, 28, and Harold Howe, 9, Are Victims Following their disappearance the night before, the bodies of Clark Brockway, 28 and Harold Howe, 9, both of Huron township in Des Moines county, were found in the Mississippi river near the foot of Johnson Island, north of Oquawka, Ill., yesterday. The man and boy had been fishing for clams Monday and a search for them was started yesterday morning after they failed to return to their homes. Their capsized boat was found first about 9 o'clock and the body of Brockway was discovered nearby a few minutes later. Boy's Body Discovered The body of the boy, however; was not recovered until about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a strenuous all-day dearch. It was caught from the bottom of the river by a jerk hook not more than 100 yards from the place where the boat was found. Various theories have been advanced as to how the two met their deaths. It is believed, howeverm that the boat was caught in a snag in such a way as to tip it and throw the boy out, and that Brockway had jumped in the river to his rescue. The man's boots were off, the belief being that he kicked them off before he got in the water. Lived In This County Both Brockway and the Howe boy lived near the river in Huron township. The latter was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Howe and is survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister. Brockway had only been married eight months, and leaves his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brockway, one brother, Lloyd; and two sisters, Mrs. Ray Thomas, who lives near Oquawka, Ill., and Mrs. Thomas Kinney of Burlington. The drownings occurred in Des Moines County, but Coroner Prugh said last night that no inquest would be necessary, due to the obvious cause of death.
