She had been a resident at Ave Maria since January 2005. Claudia Maisch was born Sept. 17, 1914, at the family farm 8-1/2 miles north of Hosmer, the daughter of Ludwig and Katharina (Hoffman) Maisch. She was the youngest of ten children. She was raised on the farm and received her eighth grade diploma at a nearby rural grade school in McPherson County, South Dakota. She married Samuel F. Weisz on September 24, 1931, at the Maisch farm near Hosmer. As gifts they received four horses, twenty five chickens, used furniture, utensils, a plow and harrow. After marriage they lived on his parent's farm (Fred Weisz) 17 miles west of Leola where they raised their five children, residing there until March 1958. These were very trying times with the bad economy and drought of the 1930s when they sold wheat for $.25 per bushel after a very labor intensive effort working long hard hours with horse-drawn equipment until 1941, when their first tractor was purchased. She helped daily with chores and milked cows the old-fashioned-way, by hand. They took their first vacation in 1948, a two-week trip to the Black Hills and Yellowstone. In March, 1958, they sold the farm and purchased the Ford and Oliver dealership in Ashley, N.D., where they made many new and lasting friendships. In 1965, they sold the dealership and moved to Britton. They then took another well deserved month long vacation to the World's Fair in New York and a trip to Europe. In 1967, they purchased a home and moved to Aberdeen where she lived until she moved to Ave Maria in 2005. Samuel died of cancer in May 1972, after 40 years of marriage. Even though she deeply grieved his loss, she flourished by staying busy doing odd jobs and making daily runs to Hardees for lunch. She had an excellent support group of nearby relatives and friends that cared deeply for her. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Eagles Club of Aberdeen. Claudia loved music, playing Rook, singing, playing piano, dancing, reading and playing bingo. Her greatest love was her visits and gatherings with her precious children and grandchildren. She continued sewing and making quilts for the kids and grandkids until her 90th birthday. Her quick wit and enjoyable, unmatched, uplifting sense of humor will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Grateful to have shared her life are her children, Earl (Marcella), Park River, N.D., and their children, Belinda, Brian, Cheryl and Neal; Wayne (Jeanette), Eden Prairie, Minn., and their children, Bradley, Tracy, Kelly and Mark; Kenneth (Eileen), Orlando, Fla., and their children, Damon and Katie; Stanley (special friend Deb Nelson), Jamestown, and his children, Wade and Theron; a daughter, Priscilla Kungel (special friend Ken Hoggarth), Jamestown, and her children, Darin and Jonathan; a 101-year-old sister, Bertha, Hosmer; her sister-in-law, Frieda (Ervin) Weisz, Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, Tyson and Brice Welch; Karli, Logan, Whitney, Austin, Destiney, Bailee, Codi, Camden and Nolan Weisz; Amanda and Lucas McDonell; Kayla, Matthew and Michael Wittus; Taylor, Mikayla, Jada and Chase Kungel; and 1 great-great-grandson, Owen Weisz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel; an infant daughter, Florence; her parents, two infant siblings; three sisters, Martha Ladner, Lydia Schnabel and Pauline Mohr; three brothers, Theodore, Albert and Reinhold Maisch; and two grandsons Kevin and Stephen Weisz. Prayer service: 7 p.m. Friday, Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, with the Rev. Dave Thompson, officiating. Visitation: 9am to 5pm Friday at Haut Funeral Home Funeral service: 3 p.m. Saturday, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Chris Anderson officiating. Visitation: one hour prior to service at the church. Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Aberdeen.
