Stuefen, a rancher living about six miles northwest of the city, committed suicide about 11 o'clock yesterday morning, firing a revolver bullet through his head. Stuefen, a rancher living about six miles northwest of the city, committed suicide about 11 o'clock yesterday morning, firing a revolver bullet through his head. A few hours before he ended his life he had severely beaten his 16-year-old daughter, Mrs. Anna Rogers. She announced she would come to the city and have him prosecuted. He professed penitence and declared that he would come to the city and surrender to the authorities. He went to his room and a few minutes later the family was startled by the sound of a shot. They rushed into Stuefen's room and found him lying on the bed with a bullet hole through his head. In his right hand was clutched a smoking revolver. Steufen was a German about 45 years old, who had resided in this vicinity for about ten years, coming here from Helena. He leaves a wife and several children. For several months his actions had been very peculiar and his friends have feared for some time that he was mentally unbalanced. Several months ago his daughter, Anna, was married, against his wishes, to Albert L. Rogers. The young couple went to Fort Benton and when they returned to the city the went to Rogers' ranch, east of the city. A day or two later Stuefen went to the Rogers' ranch and, threatenting Rogers with a rifle, forced him to give up his wife, and Stuefen took the girl to his own home and warned Rogers to keep away. Rogers instituted habeus corpus proceedings in order to secure possession of his wife. When the case was called to court, Mrs. Rogers refused to admit her father was holding her against her will, and Judge Leslie could not act. Mrs. Rogers returned to her father's home and he since has been very unkind to her, his displeasure culminating in the beating he administered to her a few hours before he ended his life. --- 18 Nov 1900--The funeral of Clause J. Stuefen will be from Berthold's undertaking rooms at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Interment will be made in Highland cemetery.
