Clauss had been in his usual health and his death was entirely unexpected. Clauss came to Fisher in 1923, and would have reached his 40th anniversary with the company on May 12th. Hired as office manager, he soon was appointed personal secretary to Jasper Fisher, a position he also held for Gramma Fisher, and for Bill. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Company in 1944. He was graduated from the Marshalltown high school in 1921 and attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Eagles Lodge, BPOE No. 312, Marshall Lodge No. 108, A F & A M; Signet Chapter No. 38, King Solomon Council No. 20, and St. Aldemar Cornmandery No. 30, having served as commander in 1938. He was also a city councilman for ten years. While few felt really intimate with Clauss, because he was a reserved, quiet man, a great many people found in him a confidant to whom they could turn when they needed some helpful advice or suggestion—or just someone in whom they could confide. Somehow, after talking a few minutes with him, problems cleared and solutions appeared. Always a busy man, he never brushed one aside with a sharp word when he might rather be finishing a task in which he was engaged. A little known side of Clauss was his hobby of lapidary work, better known as stone cutting, at which he become quite proficient, in later years making jewelry of professional standards. Not always satisfied with the commercial equipment available on the market, he sometimes improvised equipment of his own. An interested participant in his hobby sessions was his parrot "Cokey," which often perched on Clauss' shoulder. The heavily attended funeral services were held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with Pursel-Davis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial took place in Riverside Cemetery. Many Fisher employee groups were represented, including the Twenty Five Year Club, Ten Year Club, the general office group, and his many friends. Honorary bearers were J. W. Fisher, K. R. D. Wolfe, Paul Elfers, H. R. Ponder, D. C. Elder, H. G. Cartwright, and R. A. Engel. Bearers were J. Westin Jacobson, Homer S. Eckles, Donald E. Taylor, Sim Smith, Sherwood Bell and Joe Lowe.
