Clay A Lewis, a longtime resident and miner of the Nine Mile-Huson, Lincoln area passed away from complications arising from a severe burning accident suffered in February. Clay was born in Marysville, CA, on 19 Sep 1917. Most of his adult life was spent in Montana. His career in construction and mining spans 68 years. Up until the time of his accident he was still actively mining. He had two passions in life, his work and his music. He was a big admirer of the musician Hank Snow and attempted to pattern his music in the same distinct style. Mr Snow had a popular song called "I've Been Everywhere" and you could say that Clay could have titled a song "I've Dug Everywhere". From Kannaka Creek in CA to Ninemile, Quartz,, Lincoln Gulch and Sauerkraut in MT, there were not too many gulches in between that he hadn't mined or prospected at one time or another. Without a doubt, no single person excavated more dirt than he did in his lifetime. He once commented to his son William that in all his years of mining "he had never found a gold nugget that he didn't like". He is survived by three sons and their spouses: William Lewis, Salem OR; Robert Lewis, Spokane, WA; adopted son Ladd Lewis, Seattle, WA; two sisters: Virginia Sohrakoff and Clyda Woodard in CA; 10 grandchilddren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. Graveside services were held at the Old Lincoln Gulch Cemetery on 8 Jun 2002. Helena Independent Record, 10 Apr 2002, pg 8A
