Clayton Mlady, son of William and Della (Miller) Mlady, was born October 28, 1923, in a log cabin on a farm near Pischelville, Nebraska. Clayton began attending school in 1930 at the Jacot School, five miles south of Verdel, Nebraska, then attended the Tuch School 3 ½ miles northwest of Verdel. While growing up, Clayton enjoyed ice skating, sledding, and spending time with neighbor kids and his brothers. After receiving his education, Clayton worked for a time on a farm near Chambers, Nebraska. In 1944, Clayton was inducted into the United States Army, where he was certified as a sharp-shooter, 2nd C-1 gunner, 30 caliber machine gun operator, and heavy weapons crewman. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge, Clayton returned to Verdel in 1945. In 1946, he was married to Wilma Heick. The couple was blessed with six children. Clayton and Wilma were married for 18 years. In 1953, he opened his first general mechanic repair and welding business, Mlady Repair, in Verdel. He later purchased and operated the Standard Oil Station for a time, before selling it and returning to his original shop in 1960. In addition to running his own business, Clayton served as the Verdel town marshal from 1957 to 1971. He was a member of the volunteer fire department for 18 years, serving as the fire marshal for 16 years, and was appointed State Deputy Fire Chief for Verdel. In his spare time, Clayton enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very proud having been in the Army, and his talent for welding and mechanical work. On November 8, 1965, Clayton was married to Doris L. Chambers. They were married for 41 years before her death on September 20, 2007. Clayton is survived by his children (and their spouses), Roger (wife Donna) Mlady of Omaha, Nebraska, Dale (wife Chris) Mlady of Inman, Nebraska, Gail Mlady of Verdel, Nebraska, and daughter, Carol (husband Mike) Davis of Omaha; two step-children; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nephew, Larry Lanman; niece, Velma Sixta; sister, Evelyn (husband Bud) Lanman of Verdel; and a brother, Willard Mlady of Verdel. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma Mlady, and second wife, Doris Mlady; daughters, Gloria and Arlene Kay; brother, Lawrence Mlady; and an infant twin brother.
