Description	:	Clayton Elm, age 86, of Valley City, ND, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday, June 26th at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Mundfrom officiating. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Friday at the funeral home with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Clayton Ordean Elm was born July 8, 1923 on the family farm near Litchville, ND the son of Otto and Clara (Tomren) Elm. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school and then attended and graduated from Hastings High School in 1942. He worked on the farm with his father until entering the US NAVY in WWII, serving from 1945 until 1946. Following his discharge, he returned to North Dakota and worked in construction, including Oscar Blumer Construction Company out of Valley City, ND. His father died in 1963 and he took over the family farming operation. In 1974, he was married to Frances Elm at Valley City and the couple made their home there. He later retired from farming but enjoyed going for rides to look at the crops and watch other farmers working their land. He and Frances spent winters in Texas and in the summer he enjoyed attending events at Rollag, MN and Ft. Ransom, ND. He was a member of the American Legion and the Valley City Eagles. Survivors include his wife, Frances, a step-son Bruce Babcock (Karyn),Ft. Worth, TX, 2 step-daughters,Dalene Brock, Valley City, ND and Denise (Kelly) Koehler, Council Bluffs, IA, a brother, Warren (Margaret) Elm,Valley City, ND, a sister, Arlene Simpson, Valley City, ND, 4 step-grandchildren, and one step-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a step-granddaughter, Sarah Babcock.
